This was quite the event! The inhabitants of Alaska very seldomly find the need to leave their northern realm -- venturing down to the "Lower 48" as they disparagingly refer to where all us boring people hang out! :-)
The "original Kaari", DH Dan and Joanna (sitting) at Fiberfest '97Well, Dan comes from Ohio originally and still has family there. So, the whole Parrish family cleverly coincided a family visit with Fiberfest '97.
BOTH Kaari and Dan had spun skeins of yarn for entry in the Skein Contest (Yes Martha, there are male spinners!). While they didn't take any ribbons back to the land of the Midnight Sun, they both figured they'd learned a lot about fiber-competing. And, they threatened to come back "some day" (maybe!) and sweep the event!
By the by, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that Dan's skein
was his FIRST EVER spinning effort! Which of you out there would
show off your first yarn in public ??? As an additional
"dig" to the distaff side, I'll also mention that the
"top" skein at Fiberfest was spun by a male-person.
It was fun to discover that we'd all been pronouncing Kaari's
name incorrectly all this time! It is: "CAR-ee" -- like
"car" = the motor vehicle. NOT like the verb "car-ry"!
Here're Toni Neil and your humble Webmeister
holding crossed Kaari spindles over "the original" Kaari's
head at the Fiberfest booth.
