The Thanksgiving Bird

Thanksgiving is coming right up — ordered our turkey at the Co-op today. It’s coming from The Turkey Farm in New Sharon — all the birds we’ve purchased from them in the past have been delicious. Also snatched up a couple of bags of local cranberries and popped them into the freezer. Last year I waited too long and then couldn’t get any. Starting to make my way through the piles of stuff (mostly paper) on the table so maybe we’ll have a place to eat. I’ve been looking at numbers and just about have a plan for the CSA.

Jim’s Jack O Lantern

It’s tradition…I choose the pumpkin and Jim carves it.  We don’t get any kids coming by because our road is sort of out of the way and all the kids who live here are older now. If they trick or treat at all, they probably go into town where the houses are closer together.  Anyway, we like doing a pumpkin, so here it is…

Wicked Sick

This hasn’t been fun at all. I’m feeling a little better but I’m trying not to overdo it. Everyone keeps telling me it’ll come back if I don’t behave. But sheep need to be fed and chickens, too. At least I can swallow and my nose isn’t running continuously anymore. I’ve had to resort to drugs and NyQuil is my nightcap of choice. That stuff really knocks me out so at least I’m getting a little rest. But I think it’s heading for my chest…ugh! While I’ve had this “downtime” we’ve been tossing around the idea of starting a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). We’ve been members of a veggie CSA for a bunch of years and have been so happy with it that it seemed like a great idea. Originally, we’d talked about doing a lamb & pork CSA. But now that we’re not going to have any lambs to market this year, I’m wondering whether this model might be applied to fiber instead. I know that ours wouldn’t be the first fiber CSA (and it probably wouldn’t be the last either) but I think that any producer who does this will put his own slant on it. I seriously doubt that anyone in the fiber community will have a problem with another fiber CSA cropping up. I mean…is there ever enough fiber or places to find it?! There are so many different fiber animals producing different types of fiber…more yummy fiber is a good thing! I’m excited about this…but what to do first?!

This Can’t Be Flu…can it?

I’m sick…really sick! Argh! I haven’t been this sick for a very long time. Did I bring this back from NY or is this going around in ME? Hmmm…It hit me so fast I barely saw it coming. One minute I had a little scratchy throat and the next thing I was walking dead. I hope Jim’s flu shot keeps him safe [so someone will be around to do chores]. I’m going to bed…

Rhinebeck (aka NY State Sheep & Wool Festival) Fun!

Rhinebeck was wonderful! It took a little longer than usual to get the booth set up because everything was new but it was well worth it. And as always, Nina had infinite patience and was very very helpful. We have alot of fun at this show and it’s so good to see old friends…and meet new people, too!  This year we had new neighbors across the aisle. Martha Robinson & hubby, Norbert, set up a fantastic fine art show and we got to enjoy it for the whole weekend!  They were lots of fun!  Martha did the official ’08 Rhinebeck artwork…beautiful!

The ACR Breed Display

The ACR Breed Display

The American Coopworth Registry, our breed organization, had a breed display that was put together by dedicated & enthusiastic members, Kris B. & Regina M. They did a terrific job and the display won a 4th place ribbon!  Applause!!!  Regina brought the sheep and Kris asked members to send items they’d made for the display.
